Where is the progression in guild wars?
I thought I'd bring up something. It might be controversial. I think this forum is very mature and can handle it though.
My question is, what is the progression in guild wars? What drives people to play the game, and keep playing? Surely it's not as simple as "It's free." Does guild wars stand up to other games that have better levels of progression? Is the point of Guild Wars not to progress, like other games of its class? What in the game keeps you hooked? Is there enough in the game to keep someone hooked? Let the discssion begin! |

This is really more appropriate for Riverside. Anyway, cool skins and buying skills motivates. It's fun to keep playing.
Other games don't have "better" levels of progression. GW eliminates the grind you have to go through in other games to stay competetive. Other games have higher lvl's and you have to grind to acheive them to get the best skills and remain competetive. GW allows you to max out in a short time and then all the skills are available for you to choose from. In this way success is dependant on how well you can play and use the skills and not how many hours you have to sit there grinding away. I think the way you say "progress" is misleading. One of the main reasons IS that its free.
for lots of people that just makes it an easy choice, and whenyour playing you dont ever have to worry about that, and even if you do get bored of it youll put in the the closet and get it out again in 2 months, and still be able to play cause its free. The point of guildwars is to be as balanced for new players then it is for newcomers, so i woudnt say progresions is a big thing ( not sure if that word means to get further) I just like the part of being needed by my mates, not needed as in the point that they coudnt live without me but i mean my skills help them alott, i mean if i was a solo, i think it would be the same but in that case just that my skills can help anyone very much.So i would say the community that Guildwars has (except for some idiots) Here i would say that the line guildwars had "your action shape the world around you" or something like that counts for me.I do feel like im making a difference Yes there surely is enough to keep you hooked up. When you think you done all there is to do in PVE theres always PVP, which is never the same. Even for those which come to a point and think i done everything there is to do,thats where the new chapters come in. |

It has no monthly fee and it favors player's skills rather than time spent for grinding.

I sense the OP would like the game to have more levels!
So I would like to say... it wouldn't change a thing. The level 20 cap is a good thing, this isn't an endless level grind-fest as you'll find in games like WoW. |

What keeps me playing is PvP that is more balanced than not and relies on more than the number of hours I can play. Progress is learning not to suck so much.

What drives me to keep playing?
1) I'm a sucker for the shiny things (heh 15k armor...). 2) I love running around and killing things. 3) The game is beautiful and again, sucker for the shiny. 4) The fact that I don't have to spend my entire life trying to get up in levels in order to get anywhere (I played EQ all of 2 weeks before I quit because I got sick of killing useless crap because I couldn't actually GO anywhere until I got up a few levels). I actually love that I can get up fast in Factions and get out there and just enjoy the game; it doesn't take long to catch up to friends. 5) New ways to use the skills I have, or add to my skills to create new effective ways of doing things. 6) It keeps me sane when work drives me crazy. |

My drives are adventure, exploration and expensive things.
Adventure. Quests, Missions and killing things fit here for me. I love having the ability to slay tens of monsters on my own at any one time. Quests that cover vast amounts of land are my favourite adventure, since most missions are covered really fast. Exploration. Just the fact there is something out there left to see with my own eyes gives me more drive than anything. The numerous ways I can accomplish this make sure exploration doesn't die old. Expensive things. I love owning expertly crafted and elite looking weapons. I need to have something to spend money on right? |

Oooh, what keeps me going...
The constant search to make my char look good, even with just 1.5K (Canthan Me/W with Ascalon outfit and a katana. Looking posh there ) Money money money The enjoyment of ploughing my sword through the next Kurzick idiot that screams "SUXXONS!" in Local (Although I wish I could do the same to the idiots on my side) |

Free to play is the big thing. I team up with family and a couple of friends. Some of them can't play that often, so $15 a month would probably keep them out. For example, one of my daughters and my two grandsons play. That would cost her $45 a month somewhere else, so no way.
Trying out new characters and builds. A-1 graphics. Looking forward to the expansions (although Factions was kind of a let-down). Getting a lot of bang for my buck, which is more than I can say for a game like F.E.A.R., which was done in a couple of weeks and that was it. |

Its addictive at first but it does wear thin after a while BUT since its free there is no obligation to play.
I quit once, got rid of my account but I had the itch to play again so I bought another account, still don't play a lot tho, mainly post here during the week and grab a couple play hours over the weekend if i'm not doing anything. Basically for me its the "pick up and play" factor..I can leave it for a month and still not be any worse off then anyone else |

Not true..when guilds introduce application forms for example it becomes more a way of life then just a bit of fun on the side.
I know some people that state GW is their life...at that point it is no longer fun its "time to join the real world" time |
